Telecom Australia was the trading name of the Australian Telecommunications Commission, the government-owned entity that operated Australia's domestic telephone network from 1975 until the early 1990s. It is the direct predecessor to Telstra.
History
The Australian Telecommunications Commission was established on 1 July 1975 as a separate statutory body following the breakup of the Postmaster-General's Department, which had managed Australia's postal and telecommunications services since 1901. It traded under the name Telecom Australia.[1]
In February 1992, Telecom Australia merged with the Overseas Telecommunications Commission (OTC) to form the Australian and Overseas Telecommunications Corporation (AOTC). The AOTC was renamed Telstra Corporation Limited in April 1993. The domestic trading name Telecom Australia was retired on 1 July 1995, when the Telstra name was adopted uniformly across all operations.[2]
Payphones
During its operation, Telecom Australia produced and deployed payphones across Australia. Some older units from this era may still be encountered in the field. Telecom Australia also produced payphones for private operation in venues such as sharehouses and hotels. These privately operated payphones are not part of Payphone Tag, which is limited to Telstra's current public telephone network.[3]
